What made you become a referee?

My uncle was a referee and he persuaded me to follow in his footsteps.

13 years on the Senior List.
European Cup Winners Cup tie, FC Viking of Stavanger v FC Bruges of Belgium, in Norway.
Running the line in the Premier League.
2 North Qualifying Cup Finals as Fourth Official.
North of Scotland Cup Final line.

 

What do you enjoy about refereeing?

I enjoy being involved in the game of football. I did not quite make it as a player but my involvement as a referee has made up for it particularly at senior level.

 

What was your first game?

My first game was in 1980, can’t remember the teams.

 

Your refereeing ambitions?

To encourage and help our young officials to progress in the game.

 

What was your most memorable game?

European Cup Winners Cup tie, FC Viking of Stavanger v FC Bruges of Belgium, in Norway.

 

What are your other hobbies & pastimes?

Sport and taking our pet dog for a walk.

 

Any pet hates in football?

Grown men, 12 stone plus, falling about as if they have been shot, simulation and people in the ‘technical areas’ who think they know about football?

 

What is your favourite film?

The Alamo (John Wayne version).

 

What is your favourite drink?

Whisky particularly Glenfiddich.

 

What is your favourite band/singer?

Abba.

 

What advice would you give to someone thinking of becoming a referee?

To stick at it and don’t be put off by the behaviour of people they will come in contact with during their career.
